 The Tiguan is Volkswagen’s first compact SUV. Tiguan mixes on-road sport with what VW describes as more off-road ability than you’d get from most of its competitors.  The marketplace today is awash with compact SUVs. But Toyota was one of the early pioneers with the Toyota RAV4 SUV back in 1996. Toyota says RAV4 SUV’s exterior styling follows a “modern-rugged” theme. The body is free of cladding, and the spare tire is mounted to the rear door.  The Grand Vitara SUV is the smallest offering from Suzuki.  The Subaru Forester SUV, a successful small SUV/wagon since 1998, was redesigned last year. Many feel it was responsible for creating the popular crossover market of today. There had been other compact SUVs prior to the Subaru but none were as accomplished on the road as the Forester.  Nissan’s truck-based SUV, Xterra is geared toward young, active buyers — or those who want to appear that way. Unlike some SUVs, it’s a truly capable off-roader, with an available Off Road edition.  The Rogue is a car based SUV. In this entry level model luxuries like heated leather seats, sunroof, and xenon headlights are options. Handling is sharp by SUV standards and the ride is comfortable.  Mercury Mariner SUV, which shares its platform with the Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute SUVs, received a few new high-tech options for 2010.
