SUVs Make a Riposte!Big may be Beautiful but small is undoubtedly Sleeker! Having the same frame of thought are the automakers, which are actively planning to introduce a smaller fleet of cars that can cater to the fuel conscious too. All the plans are expected to be converted into cars in the coming months and some of the cars that are in line for makeover are: 2012 Ford Focus, 2011 Chevrolet Cruze and 2011 Hyundai Elantra. The sales graph from this year’s statistics however, could give the manufacturers a pause since the results for this year show a different yet surprising trend altogether. Nevertheless, the hottest-selling automobile in this market segment is now sport-utility-vehicles. According to sales-statistics the mid-size and luxury SUVs are selling faster than any other vehicle type for summer. The sales-statistics are inclusive of the measure of days of inventory. Normally, Automakers measure the speed of sales of a new vehicle once it reaches the showroom and the sales-statistics proved that many new SUVs are sold as soon as they reach the dealer showroom. Inside the industry, reports show that manufacturers for this month are waiting on an average of 31days worth of 2010 luxury SUVs and 34 days worth of more affordable mid-size sport-models. Overall, of the ten vehicles in 2010 for the shortest supply, nine of them are SUVs which range in the price, starting from the inexpensive Toyota RAV4 which has a 16-days supply to the more luxurious and costly 2010 Audi Q7 which has a 15-days supply. The smaller cars average a 79-days supply and only the vans are moving very slow in the market. The numbers for small cars is inclusive of lots of vehicles which are in their final model years and there are many of them which are even being sold by brands, which are on the way to the scrap mound like the Pontiac. Smaller cars are outdoing the SUVs in sales, on the whole the total number of small cars purchased in America was 974,000 and these figures are for the first six months of this year, whereas SUVs sold at only 121,000 for the first six months of 2010. For all those looking to purchase cars or SUVs, this period could require a more careful approach and it becomes imperative while negotiating the cost of a sought-after new SUV. Reports say that one should expect to pay close to the complete cost of a Chevrolet Traverse, Land Rover LR4 or GMC Acadia for case in point. However, there are more deals to look forward to and more than that to come with the entrance of the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, could mean that what ever remains of 2010 Cherokees are left unsold are now being sold at an average of 20 percent below the MSRP.
