Obama - We cannot drive SUVs

There was a quote from the president Jimmy Carter “I ask Congress to give me authority for mandatory conservation and for standby gasoline rationing. . . . And I’m asking you for your good and for your Nation’s security to take no unnecessary trips, to use carpools or public transportation whenever you can, to park your car one extra day per week, to obey the speed limit, and to set your thermostats to save fuel.

Every act of energy conservation like this is more than just common sense — I tell you it is an act of patriotism”, but it failed in his administration.

During the 2004 campaign, John Kerry said during a debate that America’s foreign policy should have to pass a “global test” this was a comment that President Bush just made people forget about and never gave attention towards it. Now, Obama seems to think that America’s environmental policy must also be subject to the “global test”.

While campaigning in Oregon where people are green friendly, Obama said that there are going to be lots of new cars coming up in next decades and there is nothing that America can do about it but can simply set an example for the other countries by leading with the energy policies.

He added “We can’t drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times … and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK.”

He also emphasized on his environmental policies by making SUV as a capitalist excess. He said that as SUV consumes maximum of gasoline and there is wastage of natural resources. Although the demand for SUV had declined due to the hike in the oil prices in recent years and most American’s don’t drive SUV’s.

Obama still thinks that American’s should not drive certain cars or setting there thermostats at certain levels. As most of the American’s choose it according to there comfort they don’t realize that the energy prices actually are getting affected.

Of course, Obama didn’t mean that as a President he will issue a notice to the manufacturer or the importer of SUV or the American’s will not be allowed to purchase a SUV but he was simply making the audience conscious about the SUV because at the end of the day it is just a big car.
