Bentley Looking To Build Ultra-Luxury SUV by 2014Bentley is working on a project to launch a four-wheel-drive SUV model scheduled to hit the automotive shelf in 2014. The design chief Dirk van Braeckel and the engineering boss Uli Eichhorn are giving a movement to the project with Durheimer to get the SUV ready. According to CEO Wolfgang Durheimer,an SUV is already in development and will be based on the architecture of the next generation Audi Q7, Volkswagen Touareg and Porsche Cayenne; an architecture dubbed ‘MLB’. Durheimer says, “I have great faith in the SUV market and its here to stay.” He counts the launch of the Porsche Cayenne during his tenure at Weissach as “one of my proudest achievements”. Bentley’s launch will coincidentally overlap with Aston Martin’s Lagonda 4×4 and may lean towards utilizing a version of Volkswagen Group’s new MLB setup. The Bentley SUV will likely feature the range topping 6.0 liter, 621bhp W12 petrol engine from the Continental Super sports as well as a version of the 6.0 liter V12 diesel engine from the Audi Q7. In that application, the engine develops a 737lb ft of torque and also accelerates from 0-62mph in 5.5 seconds. A gasoline powered W12 will also be available for the markets where diesels are not as popular. Although to start the production the Bentley SUV is still waiting to be signed off officially by the VW board. However, the British automaker is very confident that the project will get the green light very soon.
