SUVs with Best Mileage

There is a basic challenge in the phrase “green SUV” which hasn’t changed much, but SUVs have however evolved all along more environmentally responsive lines, particularly as they’ve stepped off truck platforms and become much more car-based vehicles.

Taking the gas mileage aspect into consideration is very important when you’re looking to buy a new vehicle. Every buyer is well aware of the fact that SUV’s don’t really have a good record in case of gas mileage but with new hybrids editions and better designs they are fast moving.

The below listed SUVs all have above average fuel efficiency in comparison to the vehicles of their size. These ratings are for the 2009 model year so if you are considering a 2010 model be sure to double check the gas mileage.

Chevy Equinox FWD:
The all new Equinox 2010 has it all – efficiency, size, fine looks and advancements. It sports a direct-injection 2.4-liter Ecotec 4-cylinder engine which produces 182 horsepower. Running a 6-speed automatic, the Equinox extends gas to the tune of 22 mpg city and an ultra-efficient 32 mpg highway, making the Equinox an outstanding long-distance ride.

Ford Escape 2WD: The gasoline edition of the Blue Oval’s triple risk is good enough to make the mark on its own qualities. The front-wheel-drive edition makes use of a 2.5-liter 171-horse 4-cylinder engine along with an optional 6-speed automatic transmission to produce a mileage of 24 mpg.

Honda CR-V 2WD: The 2010 version of the CR-V receives strong exterior changes but the story remains unchanged underneath the hood, where a 167-horsepower 2.4-liter four equipped which delivers good mileage of 20 mpg city/27-22 highway figures with a 5-speed automatic transmission.

Jeep Patriot and Compass: As one could guess, this Jeep’s claim to fame is leading the 4X4 gas-mileage group, enjoying the top mileage that no other 4-wheel or all-wheel-drive is offering in this category. Jeep provides the Patriot and Compass with a 172-horse 2.4-liter engine or 2.0-liter 158-horse four that generates 2-wheel or front-wheel-drive 23 mpg city/29-25 mpg highway mileage and 4-wheel or all-wheel-drive 23 mpg city/28-25 mpg highway mileage, plus a preference between a CVT and a 5-speed manual.

Mazda CX-7 2WD: The CX-7i is the mileage king in Mazda’s CX listings, using a 2.5-liter engine rated at 161 horsepower and a 5-speed automatic transmission to produce its 20 mpg city/28 mpg highway records.

Saturn Vue Hybrid: The hybrid system is not a traditional setup for Saturn Vue. As an alternative, to reduce the fuel consumption, it turns off the fuel engine at stoplights independently and uses its electric motor only to restart the engine at takeoff and under heavy speeding up. The petrol side of the equation consists of a 2.4-liter 4-banger rated at 172 horsepower provides drive that returns 25 mpg city/ 32-28 mpg highway mileage figures.

Subaru Forester AWD: Subaru is the award winner of this category, taking home best SUV of the year honored from Motor Trend magazine. The Forester does everything well basically. Its 170-horsepower boxer 4-cylinder engine provides incentive that returns 20 mpg city/27 mpg highway mileage statistics with a 5-speed manual and 20/26 mpg with the optional 4-speed automatic.

Toyota RAV4 FWD: Toyota’s entrant in this extremely competitive market division. A 2.5-liter four rated at 179 horsepower provides drive that returns 21 mpg city/27-24 mpg highway mileage figures with a 4-speed automatic transmission.

The most recent editions of several SUVs manage to get pretty respectable fuel mileage. If you are looking for something a little spacious then an average vehicle but are still concerned about fuel efficiency, any of these SUVs should meet your requirements.
