SUV Rollovers on Rural Roads

An SUV rolls over due to a disturbance of the center of gravity of the vehicle. SUV’s are higher off the ground than other automotives, making them at a greater risk of rollover incidents. When the SUV runs off the road or the tires experience inequality, this impacts the vehicles center of gravity and can result in a rollover accident.

A rollover crash is a complicated event, heavily affected by driver and road characteristics, in addition to the design of the vehicle. Therefore, a consumer should also know that:

All types of vehicles can roll over in certain conditions. Whereas SUVs have the highest number of rollovers per 100 accidents, because of the higher numbers of occupants in the vehicle on the road, approximately half of all rollovers which occurred in 1999 concerned passenger cars.

Rollovers Are More Likely on Rural Roads and Highways

When a vehicle goes off rural roads it is likely to overturn when it strikes a ditch or embankment or is tripped by soft soil. Several other rollover crashes happen along freeways with grassy or dirt medians when a driver loses control at highway speeds and the vehicle slides sideways off the road and overturns when the tires dig into the dirt,

In view of the fact that most vehicle rollovers are single-vehicle crashes, they are often avoidable. They are different non-rollover multiple-vehicle crashes relating frontal, side and rear collisions, where another driver could have been accountable for the crash. To reduce the threat of a rollover crash and serious injury, the driver should:

Always Wear Seat Belts: Despite the consequences of vehicle choice, the consumer and his or her passengers can spectacularly reduce their risk of being killed or seriously wounded in a rollover crash by basically using their seat belts. Seat belt use has an even better effect on decreasing the deadliness of rollover crashes than on other crashes because numerous victims of rollover crashes die as a result of being partly or completely thrown from the vehicle. NHTSA estimates that belted occupants are about 75% less likely to be killed in a rollover crash than unbelted occupants.

Avoid Conditions That Lead To Loss Of Control: Most familiar reasons drivers lose control of their vehicles and run off of the road include: driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, driving while sleepy or inattentive, or driving too fast for the conditions.

Be Careful on Rural Roads: Drivers are supposed to be particularly cautious on curved rural roads and maintain a safe speed to avoid going off-road and striking a ditch or embankment and rolling over.

Avoid Extreme Panic-like Steering: one more situation which may be the reason of rollover is where a driver overcorrects the steering as a panic response to an urgent condition or to something as simple as dropping a wheel off the roadway. Particularly at freeway speeds, over correcting or excessive steering may possibly cause the driver to lose control resulting in the vehicle sliding sideways and rolling over. If your vehicle is supposed to go off the roadway, slowly but surely reduce the vehicle speed and then effortlessness the vehicle back on to the roadway when it is safe to do so.

Maintain Tires Properly: Given that maintaining your vehicle’s control while driving is the most essential aspect in reducing the chances of a vehicle rollover, inappropriately inflated and damaged tires can be risky. Worn tires may cause the vehicle to slide sideways on wet or slippery pavement, resulting in the vehicle sliding off the road and increasing the risk of rolling over. Improper increase can accelerate tire wear, which can also cause disastrous failures. It is significant that consumers maintain tires properly and replace them, when necessary.

Load Vehicles properly: check with your owner’s manual to decide the greatest safe cargo for your vehicle, and the proper distribution of that load. Particularly pay attention to the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions and weight limits when using any type of roof frame. Any load placed on the roof will be above the center of gravity of the vehicle and will raise the probability of rolling over.
