Mid Size Premium SUVs

Over the years, SUVs have grown from fairly basic truck-based vehicles to include car-based crossovers, mid- and full-size SUVs and luxuriously appointed mansions on wheels. Rather than separate this general segment out by individual body types, we divided them up according to price ranges. Within these ranges, you’ll find both crossovers and truck-based SUVs from domestic, Asian and European manufacturers.

The concept of the SUV advanced from the functionality of the Jeep and Land Rover military vehicles. Its ability to trek across difficult land terrains made this vehicle’s design an ideal concept for tackling rural roads, snow, ice and other adverse weather conditions. The first model of the SUV appeared in 1938, as the GAZ-61. In 1948, the Willys Jeep Wagon appeared on the market. This was followed by the Land Rover Series II 109 in 1958, and in 1961 by the International Harvester Scout 80. More SUV-type vehicles were produced in the 1960s and 1970s, and since that time they have continued to evolve with improved power, handling, and functionality.

Sport Utility Vehicles(SUVs) are very trendy and are classified as compact, mid-size or full size, based on their size, engine power, towing capacity, seating and price. Premium midsize SUVs are priced from the mid-$20,000 range, up to the $40,000s. They come with standard six-cylinder engines, and are equipped with many features, such as automatic windows and power seats. For additional fees, the engine can be upgraded to an eight-cylinder engine, and facilities can be additional to the SUV’s features.

SUVs are generally equipped with a small truck towing capacity, and many SUVs have four-wheel drive functionality. They seat between five and eight occupants, comparable to the family minivan. Premium mid-size SUV are very popular alternatives to standard sedans or station wagons. They are built with most of the features of the larger SUVs, yet their modest size makes them a suitable choice for family usage.

Like regular mid size SUVs, customers buy the premium models as replacements for family cars or minivans. But singles, empty-nesters, and couples without kids also buy them as status symbols. Premium midsize SUVs characteristically accommodate five passengers, yet many auto brands offer a third seat feature, which is generally intended to seat additional children. They offer the convenience of seat flexibility to make way for more cargo space upon demand. Premium midsize SUVs can offer almost 100 cf of cargo space when the seats are folded away. They tend to ride high and present a sophisticated, elegant appearance inside and out. Typical tradeoffs are high prices and mediocre fuel mileage.

On the other hand, Premium midsize SUVs have some modest off-road capability but do not have as good gas mileage as the compact SUVs. They also have a high insurance rate for coverage, due to its performance and safety history. For the well heeled premium-midsize SUVs are today’s station wagons without the disgrace.
