SUV & Car Driving in Bad Weather Conditions – Basic Tips

suv-in-bad-weather

Bad weather happens everywhere. There’s no getting around it. For licensed car drivers, it can be a nightmare. Unfortunately, many people don’t have the luxury of staying home or calling in sick every time the weather condition is bad. It’s just something drivers have to become skilled at to do, whether they like it or not.

Becoming a better driver doesn’t happen overnight. Getting out and doing it helps, but at times extra is considered necessary. Learning few self-protective driving just may save a person’s life as a driver gets behind the steering wheel. The best tactic for driving in bad weather is to avoid any mishaps. But if going out is essential or you get caught in bad weather conditions, follow these safe driving instructions:

Make sure your car headlights are on.

Add to your following distance — if you’re going slowly because of the bad weather, is there in fact a point to being only 2 feet behind the car in front of you?

Reduce your speed as braking takes longer on slippery roads — the slower you go, the easily it will be for you to stop.

Ensure if your car is equipped for the conditions (verify your battery, antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, windshield wipers, headlights, tires).

Use caution near intersections. Never assume that because you have the green light or the right of way that the intersection will be clear — always scan ahead to spot potential hazards.

Stay in one lane to the extent that is possible — avoid needless lane changes (don’t go zipping in and out of traffic, passing people, etc.).

Keep two hands on the steering wheel and two eyes on the road at all times.

If being careful doesn’t help and the car driver still finds himself skidding on the pavement, follow these steps to steer out of it:

Take the foot off the accelerator.

Turn the front wheels of your car in the direction the car is supposed to go.

The car might skid in the opposite direction.

Turn the steering wheel back in the right direction and then straighten them to bring the car under control.

Drivers are always at the mercy of the weather. Many SUV and car accidents are caused due to human error and unsafe driving. Nevertheless, many of road injuries and deaths are caused when driving in fog, snow, icy roads, strong and gusty winds and heavy rain.

  • Tires have a certain amount of load that it can carry. When you put too much stuff in the vehicle, it also affects the condition of the tire. When there is excessive load in the car, the tire is possible to come off the rim when the car tries to turn in the road corner. Each vehicle has its appropriate type of tire to be used so depending on the possible loading on that particular vehicle.
