Driving In Foggy Weather ConditionsWith the attack of winter comes the probability of fog and the need for drivers to use their lights aptly. RAC patrol of the year Paul Oakley said “Even though using your lights will make things more visible, there are times when the improper use can be prohibited and cause visibility problems for others. Many drivers switch on their rear fog lights immediately it gets misty or starts to rain, not understanding the threat of this misuse of their lights may cause to themselves and other road users.” The law, as presented by The Highway Code, announces that front and rear fog lights must not be used except visibility is fatally reduced - which usually means when you cannot see further than 100 meters (328 feet) - and that they must be switched off once the visibility improves. Using rear fog lights after visibility is greater than 100 meters can cover the brake lights and confuse those drivers following, as a result increasing the risk of a rear-end car or suv accident rather than reducing it. Front fog lights are supposed to be only used where visibility is badly reduced and should be adjusted so as not to cause unnecessary dazzle or anxiety to other road users. The improper use is treacherous as it can affect the oncoming driver’s ability to see cyclists, pedestrians, and the road too. Before starting off on any journey, no matter what the weather, you should make sure your lights are clean and in full working order, and keep in mind when driving in weather where visibility is poor: • Use the correct lights for the weather conditions. • Use dipped headlights not full beam. • Use fog lights if visibility is 100 meters or less, but remember to switch them off when visibility improves. • Don’t hang on to the tail-lights of the vehicle in front. • Leave plenty of room between you and the car in front. • Slow down. Following these guidelines should make sure that you and your family always have a safe journey. And following these policies will make it safer not only for you but also for your fellow motorists.
