2012 Kia Sorento

Only last year, Kia Sorento was redesigned and thus not many changes in this crossover SUV were on cards for 2012. What we now see are a few upgrades that help the vehicle perform better in terms of both output and power. The driver’s seat is ventilated and there are the voice activated interfaces. Anyways, with the recent revamp, Kia Sorento’s makers have already attempted to make a place in SUV segment. A point strongly in favor of this SUV is its attractive starting price. Additionally, 2012 Kia Sorento’s third row seat is good enough for adults as well, thus making it more usable for family audiences.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options

You can buy the base model or LX or EX or Sporty SX Kia Sorento. Standard inclusions in the base model are six-speed manual transmission, cruise control, full power accessories, 17-inch alloy wheels, tilt-and-telescoping multifunction steering wheel, air-conditioning, trip computer, CD sound system with satellite radio, auxiliary audio jack,  Bluetooth connectivity and an iPod adapter.

With LX you buy six-speed automatic transmission, second-row armrest and body-colored heated outside mirrors as standard inclusions and in the optional category you can avail the Convenience package (foglamps, rear parking sensors, robust four-cylinder engine only for front-wheel-drive models, roof rails, back-up camera and heated front seats and the third-row seat exclusively for LX V6 models). At the EX level, you get all LX features plus 18-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, power driver seat, keyless ignition/entry, leather-wrapped steering wheel, shift knob, rear parking sensors and the Kia’s Uvo voice-activated electronics interface. If you further go for a premium plus package, you also get power-folding outside mirrors, a hard-drive-based navigation system, rearview camera, leather seating, Infinity surround-sound audio system and heated front seats and more. In the SX model, focus is more towards exterior styling and there is the sport-tuned suspension.

Standard safety inclusions are antilock disc brakes, hill descent control, stability control, front active head restraints, side curtain airbags, hill-start assist and front-seat side airbags. Edmund brake test results are quite impressive and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s crash tests, Kia Sorento earned ‘good’ rating.

Powertrains and Performance

At base and LX levels, there is the 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine in Kia Sorento which yields 169 pound-feet of torque and 175hp. On EX, there is a direct-injected version of the stated engine and this yields 191 hp and 181 lb-ft torque. The same engine is optional on LX trim level. Six-speed transmission is manual on base levels, while in other models there is six-speed automatic transmission.

In Edmunds speed tests, the car has performed average. It takes 9.9 to accelerate from 0-60 mph and these figures are certainly not competitive.

Interior Design and Special Features

Kia Sorento’s makers know that to compete with the best, they must offer the best and thus with this car you can expect high quality designs and materials. For long trips, front rows are pretty comfortable and the second row is more suited only for 2 passengers.

Driving Impressions

Kia Sorento is exciting, especially with its engine lineup and starting price range. The car’s good and though there are the old favorites, but this SUV too deserves to get a reasonable slot on the consideration list.
