2010 Compact SUV : VOLKSWAGEN Tiguan

The Tiguan is Volkswagen’s first compact SUV. Tiguan mixes on-road sport with what VW describes as more off-road ability than you’d get from most of its competitors. Introduced last year, the diminutive yet sporty SUV heads into 2010 relatively unchanged, the most notable difference being a new instrument cluster. Volkswagen Tiguan SUV is available in S, SE, and SEL trim levels. All models are front-wheel drive as standard, but four-wheel drive is an option on the SE and SEL models only.

Bluetooth is now standard on the SE and SEL trim levels, and the Premium VIII radio w/touchscreen replaces the outgoing VII version. In addition, MDI w/iPod cable is now only available in the Nav package. Despite the small exterior dimensions there is plenty of room for five occupants plus luggage. The Tiguan is a refined vehicle, with only some wind noise at high speeds and a touch of road noise on rough surfaces. Build quality is high, particularly the perception of quality in the cabin. Storage cubbies and bins are plentiful and cargo space is more than adequate.

Standard safety features in Volkswagen Tiguan SUV include ABS, traction control, antiskid system with front, side and curtain side airbags. The Tiguan SUV’s starting price is a bit higher than most of its competitors, but Volkswagens have always cost a bit extra — note the Jetta and Passat SUV, for example. A well-equipped Tiguan competes with compact luxury SUVs like the Acura RDX and Land Rover LR2 SUVs.
